Dominion Power Line Could Harm Birds

The Friends of Huntley Meadows Park (FOHMP) are seeking support for their request that Dominion Virginia Power redesign a power line project (Dominion Rebuild Project Case No. PUE-2015-00133).  This project would replace an existing 230-kilovolt transmission line along a 2.6 mile stretch of existing right of way with 20- to 40-foot poles and transmission lines above the tree line near the park’s southern boundary.  FOHMP is advocating an independent assessment of possible damage to natural, historical and archaeological and cultural resources.

FOHMP also is urging Dominion to lower the poles below the tree line, minimize bird collisions and electrocution risks and restore native vegetation.  They urge that Dominion install bird flight diverters to make lines more visible to birds.   Since the park is in the Atlantic flyway, the project could affect both resident and migratory birds.
