Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Votes NO to Bike Paths in Huntley Meadows Park

On February 5, 2019 the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors met to consider whether to remove two proposed bike trails through Huntley Meadows Park in southeast Fairfax County from the County’s Comprehensive Plan and Bicycle Master Plan.  While supporting green forms of transportation is usually an excellent use of public resources, the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia joined the Friends of Huntley Meadows Park to speak at the meeting and recommend removing the trails from the Master Plan. Previously, the Fairfax County Planning Commission had agreed with our recommendations to remove the trails.

After hearing testimony from the Planning Commission in favor of the recommendation, ten community members in support, and one opposed, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to accept the proposal from Supervisor McKay to reject the proposed bike paths in Huntley Meadows Park and accept an amendment to develop alternative routes for bike paths in nearby areas.

Thanks to everyone who supported this effort to preserve a rare park in our community!
