Description: On this spring trip to southern Virginia, we will bird at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, great for spring warblers and one of the few locations in Virginia for Swainson’s Warbler. We will also visit Piney Grove Preserve, where the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker is at the northern-most part of its range. Our group will meet Friday evening, May 6 at our hotel for a “get-acquainted.” Birding will begin early on Saturday, May 7, at Great Dismal Swamp. At the end of the day, we will meet for dinner at Harper’s Table. On Sunday, May 8, we will have another early start, traveling 45 minutes from Suffolk to Piney Grove Preserve, near Wakefield, VA.
Leaders: We are pleased to have Steve Coari, Virginia Beach Audubon Society, guiding us at Great Dismal Swamp, and a representative from the Center for Conservation Biology, guiding at Piney Grove.
Location: Our hotel is the Hampton Inn, 1017 Centerbrooke Lane, Suffolk, VA. Participants should make their own room reservation by calling 757-935-5880 and ask for the special rate for ASNV ($109). Room reservations for the group rate must be made by April 6.
As there are no restaurants or fast food in our birding area, and because of our early start on Sunday, please bring your lunch for Saturday and something for breakfast on Sunday.
Cost: $45 for ASNV members, $55 for non-members.
Group Limit: 15 participants. Note: the trip is currently full, but we are accepting people on the wait list.
Participants will receive an email providing additional details. For any questions, please contact Ellen Jacobson.
