Description: On this spring trip to southern Virginia, we will bird at Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, a spring warbler destination and one of the few Virginia locations for Swainson’s Warbler. We will also visit Piney Grove Preserve, where the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker is at the northern-most part of its range. Our group will meet Friday evening, May 4 at our hotel for a “get-acquainted.” Birding will begin early on Saturday, May 5, at Great Dismal Swamp. At the end of the day, we will meet for dinner at Plaid Turnip (optional, dinner paid by participant). On Sunday, May 8, we will have an even earlier start, traveling 45 minutes from Suffolk to Piney Grove Preserve, near Wakefield, VA.
Leaders: We are pleased to have Bobby Clontz, the Preserve Manager for Piney Grove helping us find the Red-cockaded Woodpecker.
Location: Our hotel is the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 1018 Centerbrooke Lane, Suffolk, VA. Participants should make their own room reservation by calling 757-923-1010 and ask for the special nightly rate for ASNV ($109 plus tax). Room reservations for the group rate must be made by April 11.
As there are no restaurants or fast food in our birding area, and because of our early start on Sunday, please bring your lunch for Saturday and something for breakfast on Sunday.
Cost: $45 for ASNV members, $55 for non-members. $5 parking fee at Great Dismal Swamp.
Group Limit: 15 participants.
Participants will receive an email providing additional details. For questions, please contact Sarah Gustafson at firstname.lastname@example.org
