The 2016 BioBlitz is an amazing opportunity to explore, document, and help protect our wonderful national parks for the next 100 years. You can be part of this centennial celebration of the National Park Service and biodiversity in our parks.
Teams of scientists, students, teachers, and the general public will join in a two-day race to discover and document the flora and fauna in the region’s national parks. Join the adventure! Signing up for a free inventory is a unique chance to explore parks with experts and learn about biodiversity in and around the National Capital Region.
During the BioBlitz, you can select an inventory by choosing a park, the day, time you’re available, and what species interests you on the registration page. Advance online registration is required to ensure a spot on an inventory team, so make sure to sign up today. Online registration will close May 19. Inventory spots fill up quickly and are filled on a first-come basis.

- Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park
- George Washington Memorial Parkway
- Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
- Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens
- Manassas National Battlefield Park
- Monocacy National Battlefield
- The National Mall and Memorial Parks
- Piscataway Park
- President's Park
- Prince William Forest Park
- Rock Creek Park
- Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts
All inventory participants will need good, closed-toe hiking shoes, a hat, layers, water, sunglasses, sunscreen, a light raincoat, and a snack. Please note any special information next to the inventory description. Most inventories are about 2-hours long.
All participants must download, sign and bring a waiver/photo release to your first inventory check-in. Minors under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Inventories are best suited for children age 8 and older, unless noted otherwise. Some inventories include exploration on more challenging terrain. Levels of difficulty are included in the overview.

Planned Bird Walks
In addition there are some planned bird walks in conjunction with the BioBlitz. These include walks at Dyke Marsh on May 20 and 21 at 7:00 and 8:30 each day. Meet in the south parking lot at Belle Haven Park, 6401 George Washington Memorial Parkway, Alexandria, 22307.
