Spend a weekend with ASNV leaders immersing yourself in the wonders of fall migration at Cape May, one of the world’s best-known bird migration sites.
National Geographic lists Cape May as a World’s Best destination for birding, something we locals have always known! Birds accumulate on the narrow New Jersey coastal peninsula at Cape May as they prepare to cross the Delaware Bay on their southern journey. These conditions offer great opportunities to view hawks and songbirds on the peninsula. In addition, close-by Avalon is a special place to view seabirds streaming southward in large numbers along the coast. With the right weather conditions, there is no better place to witness the spectacular natural history of migration that has occurred here annually for time immemorial. We have picked one of the best times to see a variety of birds.
During this journey, we will visit some amazing birding spots starting with the Cape May Lewes Ferry and also the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, Cape May Point State Park, Higgee Beach Wildlife Management Area, the Cape May Lighthouse Hawk Watch, and the Avalon Seawatch.
Tickets are $100 for members and $125 for non-members (plus fees). This does not include accomodations, transporation or food. This ticket covers your participation in the guided birding on Saturday and Sunday morning with our experienced leaders. Proceeds benefit ASNV's work on bird conservation in Northern Virginia.
Your leaders have been traveling to Cape May annually for many years and will provide a fun and educational weekend that fits the migration conditions we encounter. Once you decide to go, we will help with carpooling and Saturday night accommodations and will reserve some tables to so we can eat together Saturday night. An estimated cost of accommodations, travel and food is in the $300 range, perhaps less, we will make the bookings in late July.
By July 20, please register to let us know if you are interested in going and your options: 1) carpooling and having us book you a moderate room price as a single or shared room or 2) You want to travel on your own and book your own reservations, meeting with the group Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning via cell phone communication.
